It has been two years since Quarto became the most popular reproducible publication tool in data science and the R community. However, Quarto is so much more than just a publication tool! I started using it in late 2022, and it has helped me become more organized, productive and connected with people in the data science community.
In this talk, I will not focus on the technical aspects of 'how' to use this tool. In the first part of the talk, I would like to report the latest news and trends seen in the useR conference and Posit conf, the two biggest global R events. In the second part, I will share my own experience in using Quarto for my career: from learning new skills, collaborating with co-workers, teaching university courses networking and building a community (CAMIS collaboration). It is a powerful tool to share your work, and make new connections - both for work and for fun! I hope this talk will provide you with some new ideas on how to use this fantastic technology to fulfil your goals.

Gradient Boosting Machines (GBMs) have been considered (in the last decade) as the best machine learning algorithm (in terms of highest accuracy) for supervised learning/predictive analytics with structured/tabular data (widely encountered in business applications). Are they still relevant in the age of Large Language Models (LLMs) and ChatGPT? This talk will tackle this very question and will also present updates to the author's GBM-perf benchmark (available on GitHub) including the newest results of training XGBoost and LightGBM on monster CPU servers (192 cores on c7i.metal-48xl and c7a.metal-48xl) and powerful GPUs (A100, H100).

Bio:
Szilard studied Physics in the 90s and obtained a PhD by using statistical methods to analyze the risk of financial portfolios. He worked in finance, then in 2006 he moved to become the Chief Scientist of a tech company in Santa Monica, California doing everything data (analysis, modeling, data visualization, machine learning, data infrastructure etc). He was the founder/organizer of several meetups in the Los Angeles area (R, data science etc) and the data science community website datascience.la for more than a decade until he relocated to Texas in 2021. He is the author of a well-known machine learning benchmark on github (1000+ stars), a frequent speaker at conferences (keynote/invited at KDD, R-finance, Crunch, eRum and contributed at useR!, PAW, EARL, H2O World, Data Science Pop-up, Dataworks Summit etc.), and he has developed and taught graduate data science and machine learning courses as a visiting professor at two universities (UCLA in California and CEU in Europe).

We invite you to join this CopenhagenR meetup, whether you're a beginner interested in R or a seasoned veteran. In this meetup we'll be introduced to two great tools for authoring documents, reports and articles using R.

**Publishing papers with R and LaTeX**
Sweave provides a flexible framework for mixing text and R code for automatic report generation. I will show you how I use Sweave and how I decide whether to use Sweave or to use other softwares.

This talk will be presented by rm who's been using R and Sweave for 18 years.

**Reading, storing and publishing academic papers with Rstudio, Zotero and Quarto**
In this talk I will showcase my setup of Zotero with BBT and Attanger plugins, {rbbt} package for fetching bibliography in R and RStudio/Quarto for paper authoring. Finally, I will show how I cobbled up a Quarto extension with a LaTeX template for a new journal submission.

This talk will be presented by [Dmytro Perepolkin](https://www.linkedin.com/in/dperepolkin), a recovering academic and data analysis advocate residing in Lund, Sweden. On weekdays Dmytro teaches Python, and on weekends he learns Julia.

Two tools for report generation in R

We kick off this semester’s Sheffield R User Group meetings in October with a series of hackathons to participate in [Hacktoberfest 2024](https://hacktoberfest.com/).

Hacktoberfest is an annual “*month-long celebration of all things open-source*” that runs across [GitHub](https://github.com/) and [GitLab](https://gitlab.com/) which “*welcome[s] anyone who is interested in diving in, and everyone who’s already part of the open-source software community.*”. **These sessions are open to all regardless of your skill level and experience with writing R code, documentation or using [Git](https://git-scm.com/), [GitHub](https://github.com/) or [GitLab](https://gitlab.com/).**

We have planned four meetings across the month of October to help and support each other in contributing to open-source projects related to the [R](https://www.r-project.org/) language and ecosystem including [rOpenSci](https://ropensci.org/) and [Bioconductor](https://www.bioconductor.org/). In the first session on Friday 2024-10-04 we will go over the basics of Git and contributing via [GitHub](https://github.com/)/[GitLab](https://gitlab.com/) to open-source projects and how to go about finding R projects with issues that you could tackle and solve as part of Hacktoberfest 2024.

The remaining sessions will be held weekly on Fridays at lunch time from 12:30-13:30 in the University of Sheffield’s Students Union. During these sessions you can come along and seek support and offer help to those who have questions, whether that is with some aspect of R, documentation, continuous integration, linting, tests or anything you have been working on as part of Hacktoberfest.
