Halemau'u Trail on Haleakela

Details

Do you love the beauty and splendor of Haleakala and enjoy intermediate+ level hikes, but want to avoid the extra gulping for air that happens at 10,000 feet of elevation?
Well, consider my favorite Haleakala hike, the beautiful Halemau'u trail. Starting at ~8000' we will hike the 3 miles down the trail at a safe, steady pace, appreciating the surrounding beauty, and through the gate at the bottom of the switchbacks. The group can decide if we want to go the extra mile to the cabin or chill at the horse-post for 10-15 minutes (snacking etc) before heading back up the switchbacks.
Our total elevation gain will be ~2,400'. To the hitching post will get us 5.9 miles. To the Cabin will get us 7.9 miles.

IF the weather cooperates, the contrasting views of the northern Maui coastline and inner crater are incredible.

Note that the path is rocky volcanic gravel and loose, sandy dirt. The terrain is rocky and loose in places. There are areas on the switchbacks with big drop-offs. Rain, or any lingering moisture will add to possible footing challenges.

This is definitely not a beginner hike. But if you have good endurance, good balance, and a good attitude, this is a doable adventure.

What to Bring
1.5 to 2 liters of water
Bring at snack to eat at the cabin (it is important to stay fueled).
Good shoes. There are plenty of trails for sandals. This is NOT one of them.
Possible rain poncho. Let's keep an eye on the weather, but it can look dry one moment and be raining the next.
Optional hiking poles.
And don't forget your Aloha spirit!

Carpool
Let's save on admission and emissions by carpooling from the back of the Upcountry Long's Drugs parking lot, off hwy 37 . We can leave from there at 8:00 and take fewer vehicles. This is also a great spot for a post hike meal ;-)
If you would like to carpool from a location at sea level Post up in comments. Also let us know if you're willing to drive others.
If you choose not to carpool please plan on being at the Halemau'u parking lot NLT 8:45 and hitting the trail by 8:50ish for a beautiful, Haleakala hike
