I want to head out from Castle Lake, west of Mount Shasta, to Heart Lake on the ridge above Sunday. It's about 1.25 miles. On the return there's a hill I'd like to climb again that gives you a view of the top of the Divide, as well at Mt. Shasta and points north and east. The amazing thing is you are right on top of Castle Lake below.

Bundle up and bring one more layer than you think you might need. Also, water, food, a hot drink. Don't overlook a stocking hat and gloves. Gaiters or snowpants are in order.

We meet at Sportsman's at 7:45am and leave by 8. That should put us on snowshoes by 9:30am.

Best to carpool since parking is limited and can fill rapidly.

This also assumes the road to the lake is open; it was when I wrote this but I'll check closer to the date. An issue we ran into last season was that the lake outlet was not frozen over that proved an obstacle for some. But there are alternatives so the day will still be fulfilling.
