This is a beautiful hike on some lesser travelled trails in West Marin through parts of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Point Reyes National Seashore. It's mostly shaded, through verdant canopies of deep conifer forests. We start at Randall Trailhead and go south, heading counter-clockwise on Olema Valley along a fairly flat three mile trail. Then it gets interesting as we turn inland and ascend McCurdy trail for about two miles, a relentless uphill with about 1,500’ of gain. We reach the Bolinas Ridge trail and go north on more level terrain through deep woods with some peeks out to the expanses of the Marin watershed. Leaving the ridge, we return down Randall fire road - the long descent back to the trailhead gratefully eased somewhat with switchbacks.

Our distance is about 8.4 mi. with just over 1500 ft elevation gain. The hike will take around 4.5 hours, perhaps a little longer depending on breaks, pausing for scenery and accommodating for possible muddy trail conditions on Bolinas Ridge. After rains the ridge trail can be wet, muddy and messy. Trail conditions are generally pretty good though. Nothing rocky or too technical, just the steep ascent up McCurty.

Rain Cancels
Rain will cancel the hike. If that’s the case I’ll make the decision and send the notification by 7 am on the morning of the hike. No news is good news!

Meet at the Randall Trailhead. From Olema, drive south on Hwy 1. The trailhead is on Hwy 1 past Five Brooks. The parking lot is on the right side of the highway

Time
Meet at 9:30 and start hiking soon thereafter so please be prompt and ready to hike.

What to bring
Layers for varied weather including wind and mud, good hiking shoes, lunch and snacks to eat along the way, at least a quart of water,

Dogs.
Dogs are allowed on trails in Golden Gate National Recreation Area but not on the Olema Valley trail in Point Reyes Nat. Seashore, which unfortunately nullifies dogs on this hike.

No-show policy
If you're signed up and can't make it, please cancel by 3 p.m. the day before the hike so those on the waitlist can attend. If you don't attend and haven't contacted the organizer, you will be marked as a no-show. Repeat no-shows will be removed from the group.
