This is a beautiful hike in Mount Burdell Open Space Preserve in Novato. There are broad views, open fields, and stands of impressive old oaks. It is a moderately strenuous hike with some steep and rocky inclines and descents and some rough stretches that require good footing. After rains it will be muddy. Our pace will be a little more than 2 mph. .

Total distance is about 5.2 miles with 1,200 feet of elevation gain. Hiking conditions will vary greatly depending on the weather and season, so prepare accordingly for wind, sun, heat, rain and mud. There isn't a lot of shade, so it can get uncomfortably hot in the summer. It can also be windy up there.

As usual for our group, we’ll check out wildflowers, birds, or whatever calls our attention along the way. We will stop for a snack break on the trail.

Rain Cancels
Rain will cancel the hike. If that’s the case I’ll make the decision and send the notification by 7 am on the morning of the hike. No news is good news!

Directions
We will meet at the gate to the fire road off San Andreas Drive in Novato.

Time
Meet at 9:30 and start hiking soon thereafter so please be prompt and ready to hike.

What to bring
Layers for varied weather including wind, hiking shoes, lunch and snacks to eat along the way, at least a quart of water, sun protection, and your adventurous attitude.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome. Leashes are required in some areas.

No-show policy
If you're signed up and can't make it, please cancel by 3 p.m. the day before the hike so those on the waitlist can attend. If you don't attend and haven't contacted the organizer, you will be marked as a no-show. Repeat no-shows will be removed from the group. Thanks for being considerate of your fellow nature enthusiasts.
