After Thanksgiving calorie burning hike - no guilt 🙂
After our recent rains, the Steep Ravine trail is flowing again. Join us on this breathtaking hike up spectacular Steep Ravine, through beautiful Redwood forests, and down the legendary Dipsea Trail. Throw in some great coastal views from the Marin headlands to make this hike complete. It is a moderately strenuous hike with some stairs, a few steep sections, and some rocky stretches that require good footing. In addition, there is a ladder to climb up on the Steep Ravine trail, (see the photos below).
Our hike will start at the Whitegate Ranch trailhead. We will descend slightly to join the Steep Ravine Trail, then hike up Steep Ravine to the Pantoll campground. Most of our climbing will be complete by the time we reach Pantoll. From there, it is down Alpine and Bootjack to the Van Wick Meadow before a few ups and downs along the mostly level TCC Trail. Finally, we join the Dipsea trail that will take us back to Steep Ravine and our cars. The total distance is about 6 miles with about 1500 feet of elevation gain.
We will meet at the Whitegate Ranch trailhead on the Panoramic HWY, (listed on Google Maps). To reach the trailhead, drive 2.3mi past the Pantoll Campground parking lot and look for the dirt parking area along on the left side of the road. If, instead, you are coming up from HWY 1, turn right onto the Panoramic HWY, drive 1.3mi, and look for the dirt parking area along the right side of the road.

As usual for our group, we’ll check out the cascading waterfalls or whatever other natural features grab our attention along the way. We plan to stop for a short snack/restroom break at Pantoll. The hike should last about 3.5 hours at a pace between 2 and 2.5 mph while we are moving.

Optional Tailgate Party
Our hike will end around lunchtime. If you want to hang around for a tailgate party, bring something to share that our group can enjoy after the hike. Fruits, cheese, hummus, chips, dips, nuts, crackers and cold drinks are always appreciated.

Rain Cancels
Rain will cancel the hike. If that’s the case I’ll make the decision and send the notification no later than 7 am on the morning of the hike. No news is good news!

Directions
To reach the Whitegate Ranch trailhead, drive 2.3mi past the Pantoll Campground parking lot and look for the dirt parking area along on the left side of the road.
If, instead, you are coming up from HWY 1, turn right onto the Panoramic HWY, drive 1.3mi, and look for the dirt parking area along the right side of the road.
Parking is free.

Bathrooms & drinking water
There are bathrooms and drinking water at the Pantoll Campground, but none along the route.

Time
Meet at 9:30 and start hiking soon thereafter so please be prompt and ready to hike.

What to bring
Layers for varied weather including wind, hiking shoes, and snacks to eat along the way, plus at least a quart of water, sun protection, and your happy attitude.

Only service dogs are allowed on these trails.

No-show policy
If you're signed up and can't make it, please cancel by 5pm the day before the hike so those on the waitlist can attend. If you don't attend and haven't contacted the organizer, you will be marked as a no-show. Repeat no-shows will be removed from the group. Thanks for being considerate of your fellow nature enthusiasts.
