Why We Celebrate

While December is often associated with Christian traditions, the act of coming together to celebrate during the winter season predates Christianity by centuries. Long before Christian practices took hold in Ireland, people gathered during the darker days of the year to share food, warmth, and company—symbolising hope and renewal as the longest night passed and light began to return. These gatherings were often centred around the idea of community, something we hold close as humanists.

In hosting this meal, we continue the tradition of celebrating connection, generosity, and the joy of being with loved ones. Humanism encourages us to reflect on our shared human values, such as kindness and community, especially during times of festivity.

This will be a chance not only to enjoy great food but also to introduce your guests to your fellow humanists in a relaxed, welcoming environment.

We look forward to seeing you there, and to sharing an evening of food, friendship, and humanist celebration.
