After lots of persuasion I have put together a little history jaunt around Blaydon and the West End of Newcastle. Meet at Newburn Riverside car park and cross the bridge for a saunter up the Tyne to the site of the fabled Blaydon Races. On to Scotswood bridge and pay homage to the reminder of that great Tyneside oarsman Harry Clasper before crossing the Tyne to the Hadrians Way and the remains of the Scotswood railway station site. Then visit the impressive memorial statue and garden to the Montagu pit disaster of 1925 that claimed 38 lives before heading through the woodlands of Denton Dene to Hadrians Wall and Denton Turret. We will have coffee and refreshments at Denton Burn library and take the Hadrians Way through Lemington and the Percy Pit Nature Reserve back to our starting point and a drink at the Tyne Rowing Club for those who fancy it. About eight miles in all of flat walking at a very moderate pace.
