Kittatinny Valley State Park
Located in northwestern New Jersey, Kittatinny Valley State Park offers gentle, scenic trails ideal for all levels of hikers. The park is known for its lush woodlands, open fields, glacial lakes, and limestone outcroppings. The Paulinskill Valley Trail and Sussex Branch Trail are popular here, each taking you through peaceful surroundings, scenic wetlands, and lakes like Lake Aeroflex. The trails in Kittatinny Valley are generally well-marked and relatively flat, making for an easygoing hike with ample opportunities to see wildlife, including herons, eagles, and deer.
Mount Paul Memorial Park
Just a short distance from Kittatinny Valley, Mount Paul Memorial Park provides a bit more elevation and more challenging trails with scenic overlooks. This park is lesser-known, which means fewer crowds, allowing a more peaceful hike through pine and hardwood forests. The trails here lead to the top of Mount Paul, where you’re rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding valleys and ridges.
Together, Kittatinny Valley and Mount Paul offer a blend of easier, more scenic paths with some elevation gains for added challenge.
