National Take a Hike Day: San Tan Mountain Regional Park

Join Park Ranger Nikki on an easy to moderate terrain 3-mile hike to take in beautiful views and learn about the resilient plants and animals in our desert. The route follows San Tan, Stargazer and Moonlight Trails along with the park’s service road. The terrain varies from level to uneven with small to medium rocks underfoot. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring water, snacks a hat and sunscreen. Restrooms and water are available at the Nature Center.
National Take a Hike Day is celebrated each year on November 17 in recognition of the National Trails System Act of 1968. This Act designated a series of scenic, historic and recreation trails in both backcountry and urban areas in an effort to provide outdoor opportunities for the public.
To ensure everyone can enjoy this nationally recognized day, the regular day-use entry fee for all of Maricopa County’s regional parks will be waived on November 17.

About San Tan Mountain Regional Park
Consisting of 10,198 acres, this southeast valley park is a fine example of the lower Sonoran Desert The park ranges in elevation from about 1,400 feet to over 2,500 feet. Goldmine Mountain is located in the northeast area, with a spectacular San Tan Mountain escarpment in the southern portion of the park. The vegetation varies from creosote flats to dense saguaro forests. Various types of wildlife may be observed, including reptiles, birds, mammals and arthropods. The park is rich with unique historical, cultural and biological resources.
The Visitor Center has restroom facilities, souvenir items, wildlife displays and local artifacts. The Nathan Marten's Arizona Memorial, located at the park, honors the Arizona fallen from the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars.
