A climb to about 200m above sea level with splendid views over Hout Bay and an interesting peek into an abandoned mine shaft with a dash of history.

Once we've explored the shafts of the abandoned mines, we'll take the contour path towards Blackburn ravine and then circle back to the start. Blackburn ravine is a gentle walk to a delightful shady glen in an indigenous riverine forest. Have a drink of crystal-clear water from the weir before we start the gentle descent back via the forestry road.

**POINTS OF INTEREST:**
After numerous attempts, 1909 seems to be the first year in which manganese was successfully mined and shipped out of Hout Bay. As it was found rather high up on the mountainside, an economical means of transporting the ore down to a waiting ship had to be devised. Chapman's Peak drive had not been built in 1909, so a jetty was built along with a chute to get the ore to the jetty. The remains of the chute are not so obvious, but the jetty is still there for all to see
