The Batsto Village Center is the starting point and trailhead for this hike at Wharton State Forest.Try to get a parking space close to Visitors Center as we have to walk.5 miles to get to trailhead. We pass restored 19th century buildings that date back to when Batsto was an important iron and glassmaking center.
We begin on the yellow trail. The yellow trail parallels the Mullica River for 6 miles. The Atlantic White Cedar Trees on the left unfortunately obscure views of the river.About 6 miles from the beginning on yellow trail we reach the green connector (1) mile to Batona Trail. At the end of the green trail, we have lunch close to Batona Trail. After lunch ,we continue on the pink-blazed Batona Trail .The Batona Trail parallels the Batsto River on right as we walk 4 miles towards Batsto Village. The last 2 miles of the hike, we follow the white-blazed trail south along Batsto Lake. This trail offers spectacular views of the Batsto River and Batsto Lake.as we finish walking along the shoreline of the lake.
The hike is 12 miles at fast pace. There is a porta- potty in the parking lot, the Visitors Center has restrooms.and we will pass a restroom in the village just before trailhead..Bring water,2-2.5 liters, lunch ,snacks and something to sit on.
