Michael Huber Prairie Warbler Preserve - Low and Slow/Mod
Details
You must be a member of the Outdoor Club of South Jersey to participate. Go to ocsj.org to join.
We will meander about 4.25 miles in the Michael Huber Prairie Warbler Preserve at an easy to moderate pace.
NOTE: There will be a short trail section, a couple hundred yards long, of swampy trail with some briars. If the water is high, you could get wet feet. (Well, it's been so dry, that you probably won't get wet.) The rest of the trail is some sand road, and some single-file through the woods.
We will take our time, stopping whenever we see something interesting, or if we just feel like it. We will stop for about a half hour for lunch around noonish. Bring something to sit on to keep yourself dry.
We will start from the Sooy Place Road entrance, on the White Trail. We will turn left onto the Blue Trail, then left onto the White Trail again. We eventually turn left onto the Yellow Trail, and then left onto the Green Trail. The first couple hundred yards of the Green Trail is the wild part. After the wild part, we will take the right fork on the Green Trail. Then, we turn right onto the White Trail. We stop for lunch along the White Trail, at about the 2.5 mile mark. This is a nice spot, with a large beaver dam on the left side of the trail (see photo), a stream crossing the trail (there is a narrow “boardwalk” across), and a bench that seats two. Don’t fight over it. After a leisurely lunch, we will continue on the White Trail. We eventually turn left on the Blue Trail, and then another left back on the White Trail. This will take us back to parking.
The trailhead is on Sooy Place Rd., somewhere between Routes 70 and 563. See pin on map. Parking is limited, which is why we there is a low limit on the number of people hiking. If you can car-pool, that would be great!
We will start the hike at 10:45 sharp.
· Bring water, snacks, and/or lunch
· There are no restrooms or port-a-potties available. The woods is our outhouse. Bring toilet paper, if you need it. Tell the leader or the sweep if you need to stop.
· Please wear bright colors – preferably blaze orange. It is active hunting season.
· Ending time is approximate, depending upon how often we stop. This is a relatively slow hike – a happy meander through the woods. Our pace varies between slow and moderate, depending on terrain and how we are feeling. But, if you want us to slow down, do not hesitate to ask. We’ll be happy to oblige. Please do not ask us to speed up.
· No pets allowed.
· Rain, snow, or high winds probably cancels. Check comments for weather cancellation before you leave home.
