Shake It Off with a Hike to Sleepy Hollow

Details

Manhattan
How to Find Us: Meet at the info desk (beneath The Clock) in the main concourse of Grand Central Terminal no later than 10:15 am. We will take the 10:23 am Hudson line Metro North train to Scarborough (60 minutes; $11.25 for adults; $7.50 for seniors). We’ll return on the 3:16 train from Philipse Manor (64 minutes, same prices).

Details: Limited to 25 walkers. $5 for non-members of the Outdoors Club.

NOTE: We’ll hike about five miles from the Scarborough train station to Sleepy Hollow in Tarrytown via the beautiful Old Croton Aqueduct Trail. It’s an essentially flat walk except for the partly uphill one-mile section from the station to the trail. We’ll maintain a not-grueling pace of 25 mins per mile. In Sleepy Hollow, we can view the Old Dutch Church (the oldest house of worship in New York), a statue depicting the Headless Horseman, and the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery (including the grave of author Washington Irving). There’s an option of touring Phillipsburg Manor, a 1750 plantation that recounts stories of 23 enslaved persons who lived and worked there. If you want to take this option, it’s recommended you buy tickets asap ($18 adults, $15 seniors) online at the manor’s site for the 2:30 pm tour. You could then take the 4:16 pm train from nearby Philipse Manor, arriving Grand Central 5:20 pm.
SPECIAL NOTE: I’ll be bringing my dog on this walk. She’s a friendly 4-year-old female Aussiedoodle who will cause no problems. But if you don’t like being in the presence of dogs, then please don’t sign up for this walk.
