Hi guys,
My friends and I run a social football group in oxford and are looking to add a few new players in the coming weeks/months.
It’s amazing social football group based in oxford city that began 4 years ago via the Meetup app and is still going strong to this day.
It is made up of around 10-20 different nationalities and a range of ages from 20s - 40s.
We play:
8aside on a Monday evening - on 4G pitch, 8-9pm
5aside futsal on a Wednesday evening - indoor sports hall, 7.30-8.30pm
5aside futsal on a Sunday morning - indoor sports hall, 9am-10am
The group would not be suitable for any beginner players, but anybody ranging from intermediate/used to play when they were younger to a few higher level players that are not looking to play competitively and just like the run out.
I joined the group 3 years ago when I arrived in oxford and didn’t know a single person…. forward time and I now find myself helping to run the group and we currently have 49 members in it!
As people come and go from Oxford for many reasons such as work, study and family, the group is ever changing and and has had 100s of players in the previous 4 years. Some people play for a few months, some stay around for years.
Because the group is large, it allows people to dip in and out whenever they fancy a game, but also allows people to play every week if they choose to sign up (first come first serve).
Along with the football side of things, we occasionally have socials for whoever fancies joining, be that a pub quiz, a curry night or a bbq in the summer. Again, not everyone joins as some people just want to play the football, whereas some people like the social aspect as well. Due to there being so many people in the group, there’s always lots of banter/convo (mostly regarding football/sport) in the group whatsap chat.. and once again, some people choose to speak socially in the whatsap, some just like to sign up for the football and then stick it on mute.
The process works so well which is why we have had such success and managed to run the same group for so many years.
Due to a few people recently leaving oxford and having changed circumstances (such as new born babies, different working hours, injuries etc)… and to ensure we get the next cycle moving… we are looking to find some new players to potentially join the group.
The numbers fill up quite quickly each week but on an occasion whereby we need a player - I will make contact with you to see if you fancy a game… and we can go from there!
The best thing about the group is the people in it - all working professionals with a range of backgrounds that is simply Oxford in a nutshell.
Each week the teams are picked to make sure it’s fair and teams are mixed up, and although it is somewhat competitive by nature, we’re all friends and there’s no real competition, no hard tackles or ref etc…. just a great group of lads enjoying a medium competitive blow out on the football pitch where we can all catchup before during and after each match.

I was a bit nervous when I first rocked up from the random Meetup group - but it has changed my life and created more memories and friendships than I can explain… and most of all - allowed me to get back into my football again (after a few years out) without having the stress of obligation to play every week, over-competitiveness and enjoy an amazing run out with the ball and the boys whenever I fancy.
Hopefully I look forward to not only meeting some of you soon, but sharing the fantastic opportunity of being part of this great group whilst playing the game with all love whenever you fancy!
