This group was created for Mothers and Fathers who have experienced or who are experiencing episodic, intermittent, and/or permanent estrangement from their adult sons and daughters. Our 1st meeting was held on February 14, 2021. We meet on Sundays at 11 a.m. ET because it’s the most convenient time for all our members from around the world. We are here to give and get support so that none of us goes through this journey alone. While we promote taking actions that support our healing, we neither promote nor oppose any particular outcome regarding our relationships with our adult sons and daughters.
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING IN ITS ENTIRETY BEFORE ATTENDING THE FIRST MEETING: ABOUT, PRINCIPLES, GUIDELINES FOR A SAFE SPACE, TERMS OF USE AND DISCLAIMER, MEETUP GUIDELINES
We understand that commitment to this group is by choice, and we thank you for letting us be a part of your journey. It is our goal to provide you with enough information about the principles and guidelines of this group so that you can best decide if this group meets your needs at this time. As we evolve as a group, we will adapt our principles and guidelines.
PRINCIPLES Effective April 27, 2021
1. We all share the experience of estrangement while recognizing that we haven’t walked in anyone else’s shoes.
2. In our group name, we will refer to our adult children as “adult sons and daughters” as the latter is more relationally neutral.
3. We may want to leave our sessions “feeling better,” but we also understand that healing is often accompanied by pain.
4. We strive to be inclusive without trying to be all things to all people.
5. We want to lift up the spirits of others while acknowledging that recovery is a journey, not a race.
6. We are a group based on hope, and we support those of us who are hopeless in this moment.
7. We share in others’ peace of mind and contentment. However, there should not be an unrealistic expectation for others to demonstrate positivity in their moment of sadness.
8. We encourage practices that promote self-honesty; we do not promote strategies of denial.
9. We may feel so deeply that we become saddened by the stories from others. However, we know we are ultimately responsible for our own feelings.
GUIDELINES FOR A SAFE SPACE WILL BE SHARED AT THE START OF EACH MEETING
.
