But what are they?

The first is "when any event, such as an action, information, an object, or a person, ultimately causes itself, as a consequence of either retrocausality or time travel"... and the second "is a situation where someone or something is trapped in a predetermined course of events, or fate".
One of the first literary examples was By His Bootstraps (1941) by Robert Heinlein.
