Martha Nussbaum's Upheavals of Thought (Part I: Needs and Recognition)

Conversation about the cognitive and intellectual content of emotion. Nussbaum argues that the experience of emotion is not a lapse of reason but is instead a critical part of how we think, identify objects of value, and orient ourselves toward socially-grounded ideas of morality. Engaging with and understanding emotion is also a critical part of flourishing (eudaimonia) that comes from the contemplation and cultivation of ethical action.
