Week 5: Conquering Shame: The Core of Codependency

Many codependents don't even realize that shame is at the core of why they are scared to ask for what they want and need. This class will explore exactly WHY a co-dependent person grew up feeling ashamed of asking for what they want (hint: emotional abandonment). We'll then explore ways to recognize our internal shame in order to move forward with doing the healthy work of setting boundaries and asking for what we want. Hopefully, when the class is done, members will feel comfortable experimenting during the following week using the tools we learned in group and can report back at the next meeting about the outcome of doing so.

This is Class Five of a 12 week codependency workshop in which each week, a different co dependency issue is addressed and members will be encouraged to follow through on the advice given the week following, hopefully providing the group with positive feedback the following week. The workshop will be based on the teachings of Melodie Beattie, though with a non-secular angle. It is highly recommended that attendees obtain a copy of her book The Language of Letting Go as some of the workshops will be utilizing the book to help frame our discussions. The book is also great for anyone who suspects they might be codependent as it is set out as a daily reader with a short 1-2 page lesson for each date. I have found this highly effective and have actually used some of these teachings within the main groups.

There will be a tangible difference in the workshops and the group sessions you know so well as they will be stylized to focus on bettering ourselves and freeing our minds from codependent thoughts which result in unhelpful behaviors. The workshops are not about the narcissist, they are about you (and me as I’ll be participating as well) and as such, group participation is highly encouraged. Remember that your feedback will be helpful to others in the group - what works for you may work for another person.

The goal for this series is to end this crazy year with a game plan for you to enter 2025 with a better focus on taking care of yourself and finding peace. What you’ve been through has been terrible but taking control and eradicating the behaviors that lead us to lives not necessarily fulfilled will be a wonderful way to end the year.
