Monthly Book Discussion: Human Acts by Han Kang

Welcome to the monthly book discussion event! We meet on second Tuesday of the month to discuss our current read and pick a book for the next month.

Selection of the month:

Human Acts by Han Kang
It follows the interwoven stories of individuals affected by the 1980 Gwangju Uprising in South Korea, exploring themes of violence, trauma, and the haunting consequences of political repression.

Food for Thought

1. Whose story did you feel most drawn into? Why?
2. How can narrative retelling and remembering provide cathartic release from sufferers of trauma? How can it cause more suffering?
3. Thinking of the characters you found most compelling, how do you imagine you would have acted in similar circumstances? What do you think you would have done differently?
4. Why do we observe the funeral ritual when someone dies? How were the characters of the story affected by their inability to have a funeral for their loved one?
