DESCRIPTION:

THIS IS A REPEAT HIKE EVERY THIRD THURSDAY OF THE MONTH! Mark your calendar and enjoy the beauty of this park through the seasons!

One of the 7 Wonders of Oregon! This park is probably best known for its rock climbing but we will stay on terra firma and take in the spectacular views of the enormous volcanic compressed rocks, the crooked river, and panoramic mountain peaks. . .

HIKE DETAILS

• Starting Point: Smith Rock State Park
• Type: Loop
• Difficulty Level: Difficult - due to long steep climb and length
• Distance: 7.4 mi.
• Elevation Gain: @1118 ft.
• Pace: Slow - 1.5 - 2 mph - lots of opportunity for enjoying nature & pictures
• Permits or Parking Fees: $5 day use fee - they have ticket machines that take credit cards
• Restroom: At the ranger station and two within the park

OUR ROUTE:

We will hike the 7 mi. Summit Trail Loop. From the park we will hike down into the canyon and follow along the Crooked River (Wolf Creek trail) until the Burma Rd. section where we will hike a 855 ft. eg for @ 1 mi. This can be a thigh-burner, but the views of the top make it well worth while. This trail is well maintained but does have an uneven rocky surface. From the top we can stop, take in the views!! and have lunch/snack. From there we will head down the Summit trail (a switchback scree trail -poles are a plus here) and cross a short section of private property before reconnecting with the River trail. This part of the "loop"will give us an up close view of the famous Monkey Face pillar.

• I recommend sturdy hiking boots & poles

DIRECTIONS: Take Hwy 97 north . . . from 97 take a Right onto NE Smith Rock Way and follow the signs to the Park
