Learn Texas Holdem or meet new players and play a free chips-only game. Get a beginning lesson or try a new move with the safety of pretend money. Meanwhile, expand your circle of local poker enthusiasts.

A few of us get there an hour early to hold the table and talk about life, the universe, and, well, everything (except politics and religion). We'll sometimes play cards casually too. You're welcome to pop in for that part if you want, but no pressure.

At the lesson and free game there will probably be talk about local private games going on in town, and you might get invited!

If you want, you can hang around after poker for other board and card games starting at noon.

Why do people like playing poker?

1. **It's social**. Poker is by nature interactive. Whether you'll win or lose depends as much on what cards you and the other players have, as what cards you _think_ eachother has. This means a lot of subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) communication goes on to try to figure out who's on top and who's bluffing.

2. **It's exciting**. Poker players live for the thrill of getting a great hand and occasionally laying it all on the line. There's a build-up of excitement that happens from betting round to betting round that you just can't get from other games. You find yourself invested in a hand kind of like you emotionally invest in a sports team. Go my hand!

3. **Fooling and being fooled**. Poker is the ultimate hidden identity game. If you're the one holding Aces full, the last thing you want is for anyone else at the table to know it. If you like hidden identity games like Warewolf, Mafia, The Resistance, or Coup, this is an aspect of poker you're going to like.

4. **It's competitive**. If you're a bad sport, nobody's going to want to play with you, but if you love to win and you can win and lose with grace, poker may be for you. This is a game with many winners and losers every session.

5. **It's fun at all levels**. It takes less than 30 minutes to learn the basics of Texas Holdem. After playing for a while, you might want to just keep playing your luck, or you might want to start learning some of the more subtle features of the game. You can start to notice, for example, how certain people play when they have good and bad hands. The learning never stops.
