What we’re about
I formed this group for two reasons....
1st because there were no local Meetup groups who hosted "Slow" hiking or walking events in and around the Portland area...due to medical problems I just could not keep up any longer with the others I used to walk and hike with.
2nd because I was frustrated with the other groups I hosted events for and the amount of "No Shows" there were for each event. I was amazed at the number of people who just didn't bother to show up.
The yearly dues for this group are $6.00 per year after a 30 day trail period.
I want this group to be different! If you say you are coming, then just show up. If you want to walk or hike and want to go faster than the listed pace, then don't attend that event...attend one that travels at the speed you are comfortable with! And lastly, think of the folks in this group as your friends...don't leave your friends hanging and don't disappoint them...pretty simple!
This group is for anyone 65 years of age or older interested in the great outdoors, movies, music, social activities, wine tasting, travel, causal mushroom hunting and more in and around our great northwest and beyond. We have found most people under 50 while interesting and fun don't have the time during the day to participate in our activities which mainly occur weekdays Mondays through Fridays.
We are a more laid-back group who feel that we don't need to charge ahead or be first in line for an activity. We will host light to moderate activities indoors and out, by foot, vehicle, bicycle and/or any other means available. Average pace for a walking and or hiking event is slower than most of the other Meetup groups out there...there are so many that want to go fast, this is a slower group. If you want a "brisk" walk or hike, this isn't the group for you!
Our activities are not limited to just the Portland area, but are and can be located all over the country! Just let us know what it is you want to do and it can be written up for others to enjoy as well as you or become an event host and schedule the activities you want to do now!
I do ask a few things of our members:
1. Do not RSVP to an event unless you are reasonably sure you can attend. Your event organizers work hard to find activities that will appeal to a broad range of people. You do not need to RSVP "Yes" or "NO" to every event or activity, just the ones you are reasonably sure you will attend. Please be considerate and honor your RSVP; don't be a No Show. If you RSVP for an event, you have made a commitment to me, to the event, and to everyone else who RSVP'd. Please honor that for the group's sake. If you RSVP and cannot make it to an event, PLEASE CHANGE YOUR RSVP so we don't wait and wonder if you're okay and/or so the next person on the wait list isn't left out. 24 HOUR CANCELLATION NOTICE IS NOW REQUIRED, OTHERWISE IT IS COUNTED AS A NO-SHOW. Please note: 3 no shows or combined no shows with last minute cancellations to limited events are potential grounds to be removed from event or group.
2. Use a real name, not a "code name" or "alias" and post your photo; not your dog, or a flower with your profile. It is hard to identify a person at an event without their actual photo and their name.
3. Carpools are at the discretion of the event host and at a location the host chooses. Usually carpools are first come first serve basis and are not reserved; but that is up to the event host. Carpool moneys are collected to not only cover the fuel to get the participants to the destination, but also cover wear and tear on the vehicle, insurance, tires, brakes and any number of vehicle related costs that the owner/driver has to pay to maintain the vehicle that you are riding in. Normally the rate is $.10/ $.15 or $.20 per mile per carpooler, (depending on gas prices at the time) however a flat rate for longer distances should be considered. Please don’t forget to contribute your share to the driver of the vehicle. No one will be turned away because of their inability to pay carpool fees; speak to your event host about accommodations that can be made.
