The first meeting of the Queer Book Club
Details
Join us for an evening of geeking over books!
This is a kick-off meetup of new Queer Book Club, where everyone is welcome to bring a book currently on their nightstand and share and discuss content and impressions - let’s inspire each other with our choice of literature!
At the end of the meetup, we shall select together a book which we’ll read till the next meetup, where we’ll discuss it.
How to prepare?
- Attend by sending me an e-mail to [email protected]: this event is advertised on multiple platforms, so it’s the only way to stay organized.
- Bring a book you’re currently reading and introduce it to the others, share your impressions, answer questions, discuss topics in the book …
Agenda: initial 15 min for socializing, 60 min for focussed book discussion, 30+ min for socializing and informal discussions
Theme: Let’s share our love for reading & (over-)thinking! We are open to all genres and styles - serious or light, classics or sci-fi, philosophical disputations or poetry readings, or even (only occasionally, though;) soapy romances. This is an opportunity to broaden our horizons, get to read something we wouldn’t normally choose for ourselves, exchange ideas, contribute to bursting social bubbles … and simply really getting to know new people well!
How it works: The members agree on a book to read. We then meet every last Wednesday of a month at 19h, each time having read selected number of chapters or pages, to geek about the book - share impressions, perspectives, ideas, ask questions. Simple as that. To make the session more meaningful, think ahead about what you’d like to share and discuss with others.
Book selection process - Trustee’s choice rotation: When the time comes, one member is appointed to present to others a list of his/her book choices. We’ll select one on the spot by first vetting those that someone already read, then voting on the rest. Next time, someone else will be the Trustee.
Guidelines
- Agree to disagree: There is no one way to experience or interpret a book, everyone’s opinions are welcome.
- In the main discussion time, stay focussed on the current book. We’ll have time for socializing after:)
- No Spoilers! If you’re a fast reader, great! Come even for a session discussing part that you’ve already passed. But please respect the others - never share nor hint on what’s in the book after the part we agreed to read.
- Haven’t finished reading the whole assigned part yet? You’re still welcome to come! But beware that you’ll hear spoilers:)
- Have a book suggestion? Contact us, we’ll add it to the list to consider for the future! But please, first make sure that the book is available in e-shops etc. in sufficient quantity in English.
Tips
- Try 2nd hand book online stores such as https://knihobot.cz or https://reknihy.cz
- When you’re done with the book, consider sharing it, for example through one of the public book-booths (a map here: https://www.knihobudka.cz)
Looking forward to seeing you all!
