Walking remote Japan along the Kumano Kohechi route, slightly longer than & more remote than the most popular pilgrim walk at 9 days, staying in lovely Japanese-style inns and starting with a spiritual temple stay at Koyasan high in the mountains.

This route is rough in places, not as well marked or as well travelled by fellow walkers, mountainous vistas and walking trails abound. We even have a day in the ancient village of Yunomine, famous for hot springs, we do have 3 passes to climb but time to do them as we are not in any rush!
The ancient Kumano region is nestled in the verdant mountains of Wakayama Prefecture — the spiritual heartland of Japan. This lush and rugged area has been considered the abode of the gods and worshiped for centuries.

Walk the spiritual Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, soak and relax in the healing waters of an isolated Onsen, dine on delicious local cuisine, interact with the friendly locals.

Our accommodation is Minshuku (traditional Japanese guesthouse). Along the trail Minshuku will supply both supper and breakfast each day, (local Japanese cuisine) please note most dietary requests are catered for.

For over 1000 years people from all levels of society, including retired emperors and aristocrats, have made the arduous pilgrimage to Kumano. These pilgrims used a network of routes, now called the Kumano Kodo, which stretched across the mountainous Kii Peninsula.
The walk itself was an integral part of the pilgrimage process as they undertook rigorous religious rites of worship and purification. Walking the ancient Kumano Kodo is a fantastic way to experience the unique cultural landscape of Kumano's spiritual countryside.

No refunds once paid in full however you may sell you space to someone from the waitlist if one exists, fees and charges may apply.

March 28 Day 1 Osaka: Arrival any time, 3pm group check in if you can make it twin
Mar 29 Day 2 Koyasan: Nanin temple stay; twin
Mar 30 Day 3 Omata: Minshuku Kawarabi-so; twin 18km
Mar 31 Day 4 Mutaguchi: Minshuku Mandokoro; x2 triple 16km
Apr 1 Day 5 Totsukawa: Gyoja Minshuku; x6 twin 20km
Apr 2 Day 6 Yunomine Onsen: Yunomineso; x6 twin 18km
Apr 3 Day 7 Koguchi: Takata Greenland; x6 twin 14km
Apr 4 Day 8 Nachi: Mitaki Sanso; x6 twin 14km
Apr 5 Day 9 departure day. After breakfast, a local bus ride to the train station.

Whilst walking we carry our own gear for an overnight journey, we keep our bags lightweight as no clothes are required in Minshuku we will be wearing a Yukata provided, lightweight hiking clothes, wet weather gear and one change of clothes for evenings, toiletries, valuables etc.

A small light backpack is required, and no bedding or camping gear etc, is required, you may arrange a bag to be left at the hotel if returning there.
We finish at Nachi Falls with a local bus to Kii Katsuura station where we train back to Osaka. Travel insurance is compulsory including insolvency.
This route is both rough in places, some high passes to cross but time to climb them so keep your bags light, and don’t overpack, we only need one set of walking clothes and a change for evenings but Yukata’s are more fun to wear, they are provided, each evening relax in a hot spring.
Inclusions: Accommodation in Osaka 1 night room only and 7 nights whilst walking 30th to 5th Apr including breakfast and dinner. Some lunches are provided.
Exclusions whilst in Japan: Airport transfer on arrival, train & bus to Koyasan temple stay, train Kii Katsuura to Osaka and transfer to Airport. Short ride local bus at Hongu to Yunomine and out again.
