This is a Winter Count, and if you wish to participate:
Contact Julie Kacmarcik by email at [email protected]
· What: Our annual bird survey of 8 sectors of the James River Park system. A time to get the new year off to a fun start getting outside and enjoying the gifts of the JR and the fellowship of nature lovers.
· When: Saturday January 18 with a rain/snow date of Sunday January 19, 2025. Start time to be determined by sector leaders. Typically, sunrise to approx. 11 am
· Who: ANYONE!
· Where: The 8 sectors of the James River Park System we survey are:
· Ancarrow’s Landing
· Belle Isle
· Byrd Park
· Floodwall
· 42nd Street
· Huguenot Flatwater
· Pony Pasture
· The Wetlands
· Why: It’s tradition. It’s fun. It’s data driven. Larry Robinson was one of the founding fathers of this count more than 35 years ago. Larry and his wife, Mary Arginteanu welcomed us into their home on Landria Drive after the count for food and fun. We would have our compilation and end by counting the days until the next winter count. Larry, sadly passed away in 2018. The count lives on in his spirit. It has become one of the most highly attended events of RAS.
· How: Contact me by email at [email protected] I will assign you to a sector. If you have done this before and are willing to be a team leader please let me know. Being a team leader requires you to round up your flock and communicate with them your meeting time and meeting place and take a group photo. You can delegate someone to list your birds 😊 Feel free to invite friends. RAS membership is not required, however if you are signing up someone else, please be sure to include their email address when you contact me. There will be relentless emails throughout the month of January. The last 2 years our compilation has been at Legend Brewery and has been a blast. I hope they can accommodate us once again…stay tuned.
Sign up soon…no pushing! 😉

Lighting Matters: An Introduction to Light Pollution and
Night Sky/Nightscape ConservationArtificial light at night is essential to our lives, communities, and society. But the routine indiscriminate use of poorly designed lighting degrades ecosystems, imperils wildlife, and fails to deliver on promises of improved safety and security while also eroding our own health. What do we lose when we obliterate the stars from the night sky and darkness below it? This presentation will explore the causes and consequences of light pollution, explain the basics of responsible outdoor lighting, deliver good news about nightscape conservation, and equip the audience to bring back the night beginning at home. Because every day needs a night.
Presenter
Laura Greenleaf
Laura Greenleaf is a Virginia Master Naturalist (Riverine chapter, class of 2010) and a lifelong conservation advocate who currently works for Richmond’s James River Park System as a coordinator of invasive plant management. Laura’s original career was in social work. She holds a bachelor’s degree in social work from James Madison University and a master’s degree in public administration, with an environmental policy focus, from George Mason University. Laura grew up in the northern Blue Ridge and Shenandoah Valley and lived in the northern Piedmont until moving to the city of Richmond in 2007. This change in her own habitat ultimately led to her passion for light pollution reduction and her role representing the Virginia Chapter of DarkSky International (formerly the International Dark-Sky Association). She has delivered approximately 40 presentations over the years, supported innumerable advocates in their own communities, aided dark sky park efforts, and assisted policy initiatives. Her favorite Virginia night sky is over Highland County. She lives in the city of Richmond just south of the James River with her husband, son, and two cats.
