· What: Our annual bird survey of 8 sectors of the James River Park system. A time to get the new year off to a fun start getting outside and enjoying the gifts of the JR and the fellowship of nature lovers.
· When: Saturday January 18 with a rain/snow date of Sunday January 19, 2025. Start time to be determined by sector leaders. Typically, sunrise to approx. 11 am
· Who: ANYONE!
· Where: The 8 sectors of the James River Park System we survey are:
· Ancarrow’s Landing
· Belle Isle
· Byrd Park
· Floodwall
· 42nd Street
· Huguenot Flatwater
· Pony Pasture
· The Wetlands
· Why: It’s tradition. It’s fun. It’s data driven. Larry Robinson was one of the founding fathers of this count more than 35 years ago. Larry and his wife, Mary Arginteanu welcomed us into their home on Landria Drive after the count for food and fun. We would have our compilation and end by counting the days until the next winter count. Larry, sadly passed away in 2018. The count lives on in his spirit. It has become one of the most highly attended events of RAS.
· How: Contact me by email at [email protected] I will assign you to a sector. If you have done this before and are willing to be a team leader please let me know. Being a team leader requires you to round up your flock and communicate with them your meeting time and meeting place and take a group photo. You can delegate someone to list your birds 😊 Feel free to invite friends. RAS membership is not required, however if you are signing up someone else, please be sure to include their email address when you contact me. There will be relentless emails throughout the month of January. The last 2 years our compilation has been at Legend Brewery and has been a blast. I hope they can accommodate us once again…stay tuned.
