This is a backpacking trip. Make sure you have the proper gear to backpack for the season. This is a point-to-point hike. We will park at Jennings Creek parking area AT Mile 758.8 and shuttle to AT mile 772.5 on the Blue Ridge Parkway where we will start.

We will stay at the famous Bryant Ridge Shelter on the Appalachian Trail. This shelter is a towering, double-decker with space for around 20 people. Ever since I heard about this shelter I have been itching to do a backpacking trip there.
Saturday: We will meet at Jenning Creek parking area at 730am. We will shuttle to AT mile 772.5 on the Blue Ridge parkway and start our hike there.
Start AT mile marker 772.5 Backpack to the famous double decker Bryant Ridge Shelter AT mile marker 762.6. We will set up camp. Water and Privy at Shelter. Day 1 mileage 9.9 miles.Sunday: Pack up camp backpack to Jennings Creek to our vehicle AT mile marker 758.8. Day 2 mileage 3.8 miles
Total mileage for trip: 13.7 miles

Bishop events is hosting A 5K, 10K or Half Marathon at Pocahontas state park. Come join the fun at our local state park.
You can register for a 5k or 10k or half marathon. Run, Walk, a little of both pick your poison.
We will be registering for the half marathon starting at 9am. Arrival time of 8am is suggested for packet pick-up.
Whichever length you pick it should be a great time out in nature and enjoying the park.

We will drive up Friday and meet at 1:00 pm at US40 Trailhead parking AT mile marker 1049.2 on the Appalachian Trail. Appalachian National Scenic Trail Myersville, MD 21773 –
Coordinates: 39.53547 N, 77.60369 WWe will shuttle to Weverton Cliffs Trailhead AT mile marker 1030.0 and hike in 3 miles to Ed Garvey Shelter AT mile marker 1033.0. Ed Garvey Shelter is a large 12-person shelter on a short side trail from the AT with a Privy near the shelter and a water source about a half mile away.
SATURDAY:
We will hike to AT Mile Marker 1042.1 Rocky Run Shelter. Shelter is a large new shelter with space for about 15 people and lots of tent spots. Privy and Water Source near by. We will hike 9.1 miles.SUNDAY:
We will hike back to our cars on US40 Trailhead parking AT mile marker 1049.2 on the Appalachian Trail. Hiking 7.1 miles.OTHER:

Start AT mile marker 730.6 Backpack to Wilson Creek Shelter AT mile marker 741.8. We will set up camp. Water and Privy at Shelter. Day 1 mileage 11.2 miles.Sunday: Pack up camp and Backpack to Bobblets Gap Shelter AT mile marker 749.1. Tent space is limited at this Shelter. Shelter holds 6 lots of nice hammock camping. We can decide at the time if we want to stay at the Shelter or push through where there are tent spots ½ mile or 3.8 miles from shelter. If pushing through need to get water here. Day 2 mileage if staying at the shelter 7.3 miles.
Monday: Pack up camp backpack to Jennings Creek to our vehicle AT mile marker 758.8. Day 3 mileage 9.7 miles
Total mileage for trip: 28.2 miles
We will stop by Kanak Indian Kitchen for lunch on the way back for anyone interested.

This is a beginner friendly trip, however, please note that this is a winter backpacking trip so please ensure that you have the proper gear. This trip is open to new and seasoned backpackers. New people welcomed! If you do not have all your backpacking gear reach out to us, we have gear we can lend.
No one will be left behind!!! Stacy will be leading the pack and Wally, and I will be sweeping.
We will enjoy the view from several different cliffs including North Mount Marshall along our trek. It is said that Mount Marshall is named for John Marshall. He served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 1801 to 1835.
We will be taking a shuttle on this trip. All shuttle fees will be split evenly between everyone going.
Because this is a small parking lot with space for only 6 cars everyone will need to carpool. We will figure out carpool details and shuttle fees 2 weeks before the trip at which time RSVP's will close and shuttle fees will need to be paid.
FRIDAY:
Drive up Friday and park at US Route 522 AT Mile Marker 972.4 at 2834 Remount RD, Front Royal, VA 22630 (38.87804 N, 78.15065 W) and park our cars. Please arrive by 215pm the shuttle will arrive at 230pm.

Mile marker 959.0 Gravel Springs Hut - Space for 10 in shelter and tent sites, spring, privy, bear pole. This is a short 1.3-mile hike in for the night so let’s kick off the new year and have some fun by bringing in something to share with the group. Pick your poison…. cheese, crackers, wine, a fire log, glow sticks the sky is the limit.
SATURDAY:
We will hike 10.5 miles to AT mile marker 969.5 Tom Floyd Wayside Shelter – Space for 6, large porch with benches, a gear loft, bear pole, privy.
SUNDAY:
We will hike 2.9 miles back to our cars and head home at US Route 522 AT Mile Marker 972.4.

This is our best day trip over the most remote section of the river including the challenge of Compton Rapid (class II), the sudden ledge, and the old mill race.
ANYONE WANTING A SHORTER PADDLE the outfitters offers 3, 3.5, and 7.5 mile routes as well.SATURDAY LAUNCH SCHEDULE:
We will drive just over 3 miles to the Downriver Canoe Company and be there by 9am for safety briefing and liability waivers. Then we are shuttled to our starting point in Outfitter vehicles. ** Must arrive ON TIME. Late arrivals will be left behind.Kayak RESERVATIONS w/Outfitter
Participants are responsible for securing their own kayak reservations via an external registration link, paying directly to Downriver Canoe Company.
