What we’re about
The members of the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club, founded in 1932, are avid hikers and backpackers. We love the outdoors and we get out and hike and enjoy the trails of western Virginia as much as possible. Our club also maintains 120 miles of the Appalachian Trail as well as 16 shelters along the trail. We welcome guests to come along on our hikes. We usually have two group hikes each week. PLEASE READ THESE RULES from our Board of Directors (2017):
1. NO SHOW POLICY FOR RECREATIONAL HIKES: Members who "No Show" for hikes 3 times in 6 months will be removed from Meetup for 3 months. Members who No Show 6 times in 6 months will be removed from Meetup for 6 months. This does NOT include social events or meetings. Reason: our hikes are popular, and there are often wait-lists for them. We do not want to discourage anyone from signing up for our hikes, we just want to make sure that the people who want to attend our hikes can do so. If you sign up for a hike and realize you cannot attend, update your RSVP to NO on Meetup, in a timely fashion. There are often several people on a hike's wait list, hoping to get a spot on the hike. If you realize you can't attend the hike, and change your RSVP from YES to NO, someone on the wait list can attend. We thank you for being considerate of your fellow adventurers.
2. ON YOUR PROFILE, PROVIDE A PICTURE that is a recognizable photo of your face. Also, provide your FIRST NAME AND AT LEAST THE FIRST INITIAL OF YOUR LAST NAME (THOUGH WE PREFER YOUR ENTIRE LAST NAME), for security and social reasons. Answer the questions. WE CANNOT ACCEPT YOU TO THIS MEETUP UNLESS YOU PROVIDE THESE.
3.DOG OWNERS: PLEASE KEEP YOUR DOG ON A PHYSICAL (not electric) LEASH AND UNDER YOUR CONTROL AT ALL TIMES. There have been multiple dog bite incidents recently (6/2018) plus a bear attack on a human (the bear was stimulated by an unleashed dog.)
