Petanque, pronounced "pay-tonk" began in the Provence area of France in 1910. Similar to ‘bocce’ where you roll large balls close to the small target ball, with Petanque (also known as “Boules”) you throw metal balls, while standing, or crouching, with both feet on the ground.
Toss, or roll hollow steel balls ("boules") close to the wood target ball, a "but" or "cochonnet" (French for "piglet"). Take turns and the team that gets closest to the target ball when all balls are played, wins. The target ball can be hit and moved at any time and totally change the game.
‘Bocce' needs a smooth, prepared court with markers and sideboards; Petanque can be played on most outdoor surfaces - on roughly level ground, with no setup!

Petanque, pronounced "pay-tonk,” is a French game similar to Bocce. From a standing or crouching position, you throw metal balls, called boules, at a small wooden target ball, called a "cochonnet" (French for "piglet”). Take turns, and the team that gets closest to the target ball when all balls are played, wins points. The target ball can be hit and moved at any time and totally change the game. The first team to score 13 points wins the game. While Bocce is normally played on a smooth, prepared court, Petanque can be played on most relatively level, outdoor surfaces that allow some level of rolling: usually gravel or sand.
Boules are usually available at scheduled practices, but if you have your own, bring them. Please wear shoes that protect your toes.
Most guests enjoy the social atmosphere of the game, and after playing several times, they realize the benefits of joining the APL (Only $70 per year) to benefit from communication via our private WhatsApp group, and the ability to join in the challenge games - held more and more frequently as the League grows.
