“The city of Enkarabis is a place where the air is thick with dust, and the streets are controlled by a network of guilds, each carving out its share of power and maintaining a fragile balance over the city. It’s a place built on crime, punishment, and fear, and in the dark corners, the Crimson Covenant helps keep everything in check. The assassins’ guild is known for its quiet work, sharp blades, and the fear that runs through anyone who dares cross it. For you, the members of this guild, it’s more than just a job—it’s survival. You’ve risen through the ranks with blood and skill, and you know the rules: do the job, keep your head down, and never fail. But now, the mission is different.
Your target is a halfling thief named Finch. At first, he seemed like just another petty thief to be dealt with. But something strange keeps happening. Finch has died twice already. Twice, the guild sent killers after him, and twice, he somehow came back—completely unharmed, as if nothing ever happened. The details are unclear, but some in the guild suspect powerful magic is at work, allowing Finch to avoid death so easily. Some say it’s luck; others whisper of something more sinister.
No one knows how he does it. Not yet, anyway. But this is a problem. The Crimson Covenant’s reputation is on the line. If word spreads that the guild can’t even kill a simple thief, the city will begin to lose faith in its power. If that happens, the guild’s influence will crumble—and so will your place within it. Finch isn’t well-known, but he’s making a name for himself. And if you don’t deal with him now, that name will grow. Soon, the hunt won’t be about a single thief—it will be about the power of the guild itself. This is personal now. For your future, for the guild’s future, you need to end this.
You must find Finch, figure out how he keeps coming back, and end him—for good.”
This is a level 5, D&D 5e adventure that takes place in the city of Enkarabis, located in the wastelands of my homebrew world of Devlosest. All members of the party are part of the Crimson Covenant, an assassins’ guild, and have been in the guild for a reasonable amount of time. Enkarabis is the only city in the wastelands, and your character was either born here or sent to this desolate place for their crimes. When creating your character for the session, please consider an evil alignment. While the rogue class is available for character creation, I encourage players to explore other creative ways to build a talented assassin.
We will use Discord and D&D Beyond to plan the game session and create characters.
Character Creation
No 2024 content please.
Race/Species: All allowed.
Class: All classes allowed, except Artificer and Blood Hunter. (Firearms are prohibited). Multi-classing is also allowed. (No 2024 classes).
Background: Your characters background provides a brief story about their past and provides them with additional skills. When writing a back story, please limit it to no more than a paragraph. Due to the nature of a one-shot game there won’t be time to explore everyone’s back story in depth. There may in fact be a considerable amount of lore associated with your PC. That’s perfectly fine. Please only send me a paragraph or less to read though.
Stats: Standard array or point buy for generating stats.
Starting Level: All characters will start at level 5. This will provide the opportunity to create moderately powerful PCs.
Health Point Type: Fixed.
Magic Items and Equipment: You will all have the starting gear for your characters. In addition, please choose one magic item of rare classification or lower to add to your PC. Potions and scrolls are also considered magic items and are therefore included as a potential choice. I would suggest items that aren’t necessarily powerful but rather something that compliments your characters persona or back story. You are free to choose any magic items within the parameters provided however. All characters have 300 gold pieces. Feel free to spend this on spell components or other equipment your PC may have on them after adventuring for such a long time. (Homebrew magic items are prohibited).
I look forward to playing with you all!
