Paradoxical Notions

This meeting will be a light and casual look at a simple topic: paradoxical notions. No discussion of formal logical theory will be allowed. The possible topics are scattershot and ad hoc; suggest your own favorite topic in the comments below for possible inclusion. The following are extempore, elaborations of my seething brain, and may or may not be included for discussion in our session, depending on the whim of the group:
- Why do we believe things that are obviously not so? What are some examples?
- Something from nothing, the primordial existential question.
a) Do logic, math, or the laws of physics exist a priori?
b) Give an example of nothing.
c) What is infinity?
d) What does it mean to be before time?
e) Is causality real? - Zeno’s Paradox: To reach a destination, you must first cover half the distance, then half of the remaining distance, and so on infinitely. Zeno argued this makes motion impossible, as there are an infinite increments of time. Where is the confusion here?
- Consider “This sentence is not true”.
- Most religions base their authority on sacred texts, the original versions of which don't exist, and the transmission of which are shrouded in historical mist.
- You claim to have a coherent sense of self, yet, arguably, the memory of your personal narrative is flawed, and at any given moment you cannot verbalize your stream of thought.
- Can a category error be a description of emergence?
- Some things are true, but cannot be proven so.
"Lovers and madmen have such seething brains,
Such shaping fantasies, that apprehend
More than cool reason ever comprehends.
The lunatic, the lover and the poet
Are of imagination all compact:" W.S.
