What we’re about
Welcome to a group for fun discussion of distractions, what triggers those for you, and your tricks of the trade for managing them.
Distractions often appear harmless, but becoming aware of the underlying reason they sing their siren songs to us will help understand how they impact our life. They’re sneaky, are rarely helpful, and are almost always downright counterproductive.
On the deepest level, distractions are connected to our sense of self-worth. If I don’t really matter, then my time doesn’t really matter, and it doesn’t matter how I spend my time, because what I do isn’t that important.
Expressed from a positive self-perspective: “I matter, what I do matters, my time matters, and how I use my time matters.”
If I were paying myself by the job rather than by the hour, I would make sure I accomplished each task expeditiously, so I have my important time back to my important self.
Distractions aren’t bad, and we aren’t bad for getting distracted. But when we’re aware of what underlies each distraction, and what triggered our inclination to be distracted, we can gain traction toward our daily and life-long goals.
There are considerations when unmasking distractions:
- Identifying triggers and connected feelings
- Interpreting the messages inside distractions
- Responding, not reacting, to triggers
- Planning for focus and traction
