Join Me in kicking off the week Or Monday blues with a hike from Big Rock trail to Cowles Mountain peak! Big Rock Trail is one of the most challenging routes to Cowles compared to the other trail heads. So it’s a good workout and great way to forget about your Monday blues. This trail is about 5-5 1/2 miles with 1400ft elevation gain. Just enough to get a good workout, enjoy some beautiful views, and still have some time to eat dinner or relax before sleep time! 😂

We will start our hike by going up the main trail on Big Rock which quickly turns into a steady series of switchbacks. The first part of the hike has brush overgrowth and manzanitas; giving us some sun coverage. Eventually after 1.5 miles, we will reach the service road trail junction and take a right to continue our hike. We will than push to climb uphill on the service road while working out our glutes until we run into some wooden steps on the left that will lead us to the summit.

At the Cowles peak, we can take a short break to enjoy the views, take pictures, eat a quick snack, and you can also look at the sign there to help guide you identify some of the other peaks viewable from the summit.

Difficulty: Moderately challenging

Fees/ Permits: No

Essentials: water, hiking shoes/boots, trekking poles ( if you use them), optional snack, dress appropriately according to weather, and a smile😊 .

Distance: 5 miles. Elevation Gain: 1400 feet .

Getting There: From Mission Gorge Road on Santee’s west side, turn south on Mesa Road. Drive 0.4 miles to Big Rock Park and park your car along the road near the Big Rock Trail Head.
