What we’re about
Welcome to the Santa Cruz Banana Slugs Women's Hiking Group! We are not just UCSC alumnae, we are open to all women. We are starting a new group based in Santa Cruz, the perfect home base to explore hiking trails through the California Redwoods and along the coast of breathtaking Santa Cruz County. We also plan hikes in the Monterey Bay, the Bay Area, and beyond. We hike 6 to 8 miles and move at a gentle but brisk pace. We enjoy the fun of discovering hidden gems and tried and true favorites while staying active and healthy. We schedule hikes for both midweek and weekends, generally one to two hikes a week. We also schedule a full moon hike each month, which is generally shorter than our daytime hikes (please see details for each full moon hike). We offer small groups to leave no trace and respect wildlife. Sometimes we do river crossings or trapeze walks; we often spot wildlife and are mindful of the noise we create.
We use Alltrails for our mapping. Generally, there is no water available along the routes so bring a water bottle. Many hikes are unshaded, a hat is a good idea. If you are unsure of your capability on a route please view it on Alltrails or elsewhere before hiking. You are responsible for you; we are in the wilderness and sometimes out of cell reception. Please come well-prepared and able to hike. There are often park entrance fees or parking details and these will be noted in hike details.
Please note: if you cancel two hikes with less than 24 hours notice and give no reason we will need to drop you from the group. Looking forward to hiking with you!
