This class is an introduction to Paper Marbling. Various forms of Paper marbling have been practiced in Japan and China as early as the 12 century. Paper Marbling has been closely related to book arts since the 15th and 16th centuries, originating in Turkey and later throughout Europe. Paper Marbling requires using whisks or other tools to drop paint over a thickened sizing. After laying the paper on the sizing surface, the colors and patterns are transferred to the paper piece, creating a unique one-off print.
#### What you will learn:
Students will learn various paper marbling techniques using modern materials, tools, and contemporary approaches in this class. Students will learn step-by-step how to prepare materials for paper marbling. They will learn how to prep the carrageenan sizing, and prepare water-based paint for marbling. Students will leave with a variety of marbled papers. We will discuss how participants can incorporate marbling with book arts, mixed-media collages, printmaking and more! Students are highly encouraged to be experimental.
