This course is ideal for hobbyists, DIY enthusiasts, and experienced cyclists. This course is designed for individuals who want to explore making a functional cargo bicycle rack out of durable steel. Your instructors will demonstrate the process, share workflow ideas and strategies, answer questions, and give one-on-one instruction. You’ll leave with a sweet rack on your bike!

#### What you’ll learn:

  • Tool safety, proper PPE, shop safety
  • Angle grinder (wire wheel, sanding, finishing)
  • Oxy/Acetylene gas welding setup and operation
  • Brass fillet brazing with flux
  • Finishing techniques
  • Cargo bicycle modification theory
  • This class doubles as the Brazing Badge

#### Workshop Goals:

  • Complete a cargo bicycle rack, understanding the fundamentals of cargo rack design and fabrication.
  • Experiment with brazing techniques, understand how to reinforce joints for heavy cargo and get ‘badged’ for brazing so you can use it as a Make Santa Fe member.

### Materials Included:

  • Tools and equipment for Bicycle Rack fabrication – Steel, brazing supplies, Hardware

#### Not included:

  • Bicycle (Please bring yours)
  • Additional materials for frame reinforcement and attachment systems beyond what is provided

#### Please Note:

  • Proper attire is mandatory: closed-toed leather boots, long cotton or natural fiber shirt, and pants (NO SYNTHETIC FIBERS ALLOWED). Long hair must be tied back.
  • MAKE Santa Fe provides safety equipment, including protective glasses and hearing protection, but you should bring yours if you have them.
  • Students must be at least 16 years old. Minors must have parental permission and a signed waiver (ask us).
  • No Experience Necessary!

### About the Instructors:

Bill Beall (he/him) is a graduate of Santa Barbara City College in Marine Technology. He has worked as a commercial diver/welder in the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf of St. Laurence. After moving to Austin and later Santa Fe, he continued his welding and machining education, focused on bicycle frame building, and transitioned into architectural and general steel fabrication. He’s made lots of cool custom bikes!

Enoch Cincotta (they/them) operates REANIMATOR in Santa Fe, NM, designing resiliency programs focusing on sewing, cycling, and emergency preparedness. REANIMATOR hosts regular events in Santa Fe – check out their website for more info!
