What we’re about
NB: You can also find this group's next event details on our Facebook group
Right up front: everyone sings together! If you want to solo, just ask, but this is all about casual group singing, which is a lot of fun and has no demands and absolutely no judgment. Enjoy!
Now...
If there's a song on your heart, you can sing it! Join this informal, no-pressure community sing-along where you choose the music that we sing to the recordings of the bands and performers who made it great. Start your Saturday in song!
There is plenty of research in support of making music as a therapeutic practice. In clinical terms, singing with others is one form of "Recreational Music Making" (RMM), and you can read all about that at the Yamaha Music and Wellness Institute website.
FAQ
Shall I warm up my voice?
Yes! As you walk to the Plaza, do a little vocal warm-up. This link is great for guidance: https://www.schoolofrock.com/resources/vocals/9-best-vocal-warm-ups-for-singers
What songs will we sing?
Each event will feature a themed playlist of recorded music for us to sing along to. We use Spotify to create and play these playlists, and if you follow the Organizer on Spotify you will receive the playlist for the next event as soon as it is shared publicly.
May I suggest a theme or specific songs?
Of course! Message the Organizer with your suggestions please!
What about masks/social distancing/COVID vaccinations?
Please use your best judgment! The Organizer is vaccinated and will not wear a mask, but please do what feels right for you. Courtesy is important in this group, and unkind behavior won’t be tolerated.
What about dues or contributions?
We have the barest minimum Meetup member dues of only $5/month. Meetup charges Organizers a minimum of $45/month, so your support helps...well...in short, it helps Meetup to provide Organizers with the tools we need to do what we do, which are clearly no longer free. There's some good news in this, though: dues for Saturday in the Park also give you attendance privileges for our other groups: The Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving Address and The Music on Your Heart. All that said, if monthly dues are a hardship, they can be waived upon request. We'd rather you joined in the fun without financial worry!

See all- SITP December 2024 - Songs for the HolidazeStarlight Musical Theatre, San Diego, CA
Agenda: Meet & Greet, vocal warm-up, then lots of song! Sometimes spontaneous dance. Plenty of fun.
The playlist for this event is on Spotify
Lyrics for the songs on the playlist will be here
Warm-up begins at 10:45am for an 11:00am downbeat. The "secret" parking lot is actually behind the Bowl - see if you can find it! Or save parking angst (and time) by using the lot on the east side of Park Blvd near the Veterans Museum and Naval Medical Center; it can be a shorter walk from there to our location than wandering through the main lots hoping for space.
There's also a noisy green tram that shuttles from those eastern parking lots up to the Park, but it can take a little longer since "our" stop is the next to last one. Finally, the Old Town Trolley tours are free for San Diego residents, and they stop a short block from the Bowl. Park anywhere along their route, and you can get there for the cost of an adventure.
If you’d like to solo in exchange for honest feedback, please let me know so that we can plan it into the event with proper respect.

Add songs for this month (or any month!) to the Saturday in the Park collaborative playlist on Spotify.

Pro Tip: it’s much more fun when you know what to expect. Take some time to get familiar with the recordings we will use and the lyrics to maximize your pleasure!
If you need lyrics (I do), pack a connected flat-screen device. It’s helpful to look them up in advance OR sing along with the event's playlist to get the words locked in, but this is meant to be FUN, so don't worry if it isn't perfect!
Remember: bring a bottle of water! Pro Tip: lemon and honey in some warm water will help prepare your vocal cords for beautiful vocal chords.
For extra voices, bring your friends and family.
