Short Walk and Carol Service: Potten End (near Berkhamsted) to Nettleden
Details
Do you fancy a short stroll with good company, Christmas Carols and (optional) drinks?
This is something I did three years ago and I thought I'd open it up to the group two years ago and here we are again; walking the 30 minute countryside paths route from Potten End village to the church in the nearby hamlet of Nettleden for their annual Christmas Carol Service - and back. The walk and service are both free.
We'll have a nice walk, a nice hours' carol singing, and a nice drink after (optional).
Please note that it will be starting to get dark by the time we get back to Potten End from the church after the 30 minute walk back, so please bring a torch or phone with a torch, and please note that this event is not suitable for those who are not sure footed.
MEETING POINT
We'll meet in the foyer of the Church Room, which is just round the corner, on Church Road, next to the church (not the Village Hall side, the other side). We'll start walking at 2:20pm.
START TIME
Please note that we will have to start walking at 2:20pm prompt. As much as I'd like to, I won't be able to wait for anyone this time, as we'd miss the start of the service. Those who wish to can always arrive early and pop to Martins' Pond Pub on the village green for a drink until it's time to start walking.
It will take us about 15 minutes to walk down the hill to the Alford Arms in the hamlet of Frithsden (not stopping for a drink) and ten more minutes to walk over the hill from Frithsden to the hamlet of Nettleden and St Lawrence Church.
The Carol Service itself is between 3:00pm and 4:00pm. The service will include most of the usual favourites; Silent Night, O Little Town of Bethlehem, In the Bleak Mid-Winter, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, O Come All Ye Faithful, Once in Royal David’s City, etc.
The walk back to Potten End village will see us back in Potten End around 4:30pm.
We will then cross the green to Martins' Pond Pub for a festive drink, which is of course optional. You're more than welcome to come for just the walk and service.
Wrap up warm!
PARKING IN POTTEN END
Martins' Pond Pub prefer their car park is only used by patrons, particularly those booked for meals, but there is plenty of parking around the village green - on a separate row of parking between the green and the Village Hall, and along the road (called 'The Green'), and along Church Road, and along Vicarage Road. ...plenty of options.
As part of this Meetup, I won't be hosting the carol service aspect - just leading the walk aspect.
Please note that this walk is not led by a qualified leader and, as such, isn't covered by insurance. Be sure to wear suitable boots and clothing. The organiser cannot be held responsible for any injuries, however caused. Members are expected to take responsibility for their own preparation and safety including adequate fluids, weather protection and a snack. Please be sure to make me aware if you have any medical conditions.
If you are unable to attend please be sure to change your RSVP otherwise our departure will be delayed. Please note that messages to the event's Meetup page will not be seen within 30 minutes of the event's start time.
