Introduction to Winter Hillwalking Skills
Details
This course is provided by Keith Davis of Paddlepower and Adventure.
It is intended for people who have some summer hill walking experience and are wanting to learn some basic skills for winter hillwalking on snow and ice. The skills covered on the day will include; good route choice, moving around in the hills on snow and ice with and without ice axe and crampons, basic avalanche awareness, basic navigation, clothing, equipment knowledge and weather.
You should have a good level of fitness for hillwalking, bearing in mind hillwalking in winter conditions can be much harder than in summer conditions.
The equipment that you should bring will include the following; Winter walking boots able to take a crampon (These can be hired from some outdoor shops), your usual summer walking kit, making sure that you have waterproofs (Jacket and Trousers), Hat and waterproof gloves (Several pairs of gloves is ideal), several spare warm layers, goggles, Lunch and drink and a rucksack to put it all in.
Paddlepower and Adventure will provide crampons and ice axe (You are welcome to bring your own if you have them) and a helmet for practicing ice axe arrests.
Our meeting point will be Tarbet car park (Loch Lomond). This costs £4 for the day.
From there we will drive to our venue in my van which is a Renault Trafic PK16 GBY. The exact venue will be confirmed on the day and will depend on where the snow is and the weather conditions.
The cost is £80 and my preferred payment method is by bank transfer (Bank details available on request).
To book you will need to sign up and pay the £80. You will also need to fill in a Paddlepower and Adventure booking form (available on request).
