Westrip & Standish woods, 6.5 miles circular
Details
This is a beautiful circular trail from the Carpenter's Arms pub in Westrip in the Cotswolds, Gloucestershire. The route explores some of the quiet lanes and tracks within the village before entering Standish Wood, one of the finest examples of woodland in the Cotswold Hills. Just beyond the woodland, the views really open up, giving unbeatable panoramas across Stroud to the south and across the Severn Estuary in the north.
The undulating route takes you through fields, meadows, paddocks, and playing fields. The route includes several climbs and descents throughout, including a couple of quite steep parts. The surfaces are generally good, but some of the fields and tracks can be very muddy in winter and after periods of rain.
Appropriate footwear is required. You will need to negotiate several gates & stiles. Most of the stiles have gaps in the fencing alongside that should be suitable for Labrador-size dogs to squeeze under. There may be livestock along the route, including cattle, so please keep any dogs on leads where appropriate.
Please bring drinks/snacks and ensure you have adequate hiking gear. Poles are advisable.
