Post-Partisan Forum: Can We Suggest a Better Charter for the Democrats?

It wasn’t a blowout…the winner didn’t even get 50% of the popular vote. [1] Many commentators suggest that November’s election was essentially a referendum on inflation and immigration. Yet members of the incoming administration say they consider the results a mandate and plan to—in their words—eliminate 75% of the government, replacing the remaining career civil servants with party loyalists. [2] [3]

It doesn’t matter if you’re GOP or Dem, you probably want the U.S. to have two functioning parties, because—as we have seen in Eastern Europe, Russia, Turkey, and Venezuela—without a strong opposition, entrenched rulers on either the left and right lead to entrenched privileges. Liberties disappear and kleptocracies steal away the people’s future.

So, after their marginal loss, are the Dems gearing up for fight? Pundits across the spectrum say no. Reportedly, the self-proclaimed defenders of our republic are simply “tired.” Instead of rolling up their sleeves to strategize how they’re going to earn just 1% more votes next time, we’re hearing only stunned silence. We need two, vibrant parties to protect our freedoms, but today one of them is dancing around with torches in the end zone while the other one has left the field completely.

Whether you’re a red or a blue, you probably have an opinion on what the Dems are doing wrong and how they need to retool their goals to better connect with the American voters. If they’re too traumatized to speak yet, maybe we, the Forum members, need to start retooling a better platform for them. At this month’s meeting, let’s ask “What is the best path forward for the Democrats?” Why did they really lose? Do they even deserve to win? Why isn’t the country buying what they offer? What new course do they need to take to become a more viable product?
