What we’re about
Shropshire Humanists was formed in 2006 as a voice for those in the county and around who live decent and useful lives without superstitious belief and without religion. We are affiliated to Humanists UK and come together to discuss relevant issues and to meet up with those of a like mind.
We believe that the growth of fundamentalist religious beliefs can represent a real threat. Although we have no wish to dictate what other people think we are firmly of the view that religious beliefs and practices are essentially private matters, and should have no influence in our legislative system or our state-funded education system.
Shropshire Humanists aims to campaign for those issues both locally and nationally and aspires to grow to provide a local voice. A welcome is given to those who have sympathy with these objectives or wish to find out more. Further details on our group can be found at: https://shropshirehumanist.wordpress.com/

FREE PUBLIC TALK ‘Circular Reasoning: The Rise of Flat Earth Belief’
by Michael Marshall
Project Director of the Good Thinking Society, Editor of The Skeptic, and President of the Merseyside Skeptics Society. He regularly speaks with proponents of pseudoscience for the Be Reasonable podcast.Don't miss this brilliant and entertaining talk on an alarmingly common conspiracy theory. In this talk, Marshall will talk through his experiences of the Flat Earth movement, take a look at the leaders and some of their reasoning, and report back from the weekend he spent at the UK’s first ever Flat Earth convention.
In 2013, when Michael Marshall first interviewed the Vice President of the Flat Earth society for his show ‘Be Reasonable’, people could scarcely believe that anyone could genuinely think the Earth was flat. Five years later, Flat Earth belief has gone mainstream, spawning thousands of hours of YouTube videos, gaining widespread international media coverage, and attracting countless followers.
How did we get here?Venue: Unitarian Church, 39-40 High Street, Shrewsbury, SY1 1LR
