Sunday Sketch Crawl - Carnegie Library & SLO History Center

Details

Let's get our Sunday sketch on! - The Carnegie Library bldg is a important piece of SLO history and been on the my list to sketch for some time now. With the weather showing somewhat warmer this week, let's get outside and document this 1905 architectural gem.

Designed by William H. Weeks, designer of 20 other Carnegie Libraries in California, the building is in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, featuring a mix of red brick, sandstone and granite construction. Bring your watercolors so you can capture all the colorful details of the facade and surrounding landscape.

*Note: Earlier start time (2 pm) to allow us more daylight.
Meet Location: At front steps.
Parking Info - Free parking on Sundays in December!

Fine Print:
As usual, we'll do a quick 'meet n greet' to get to know each other (if you're new or catch or for the regulars) - Try to show up on time or you'll miss introductions. Then we'll check supplies and spread out in search of the perfect spot to draw.

Typically we can get two to three sketches in per event. Plan for about 30-40 mins per session. This gives us the ability to draw the same space from different angles or pick up and move to another nearby spot to keep things fresh and interesting. After each sketch session, we'll get back together as a group to share and discuss what we created.

Things to consider before joining session:

  • Skill level: All ages and abilities welcome. No sketching experience needed. This is a non-judgemental supportive environment that encourages you to express yourself however you want. If you have any mobility considerations please let me know so we can factor that into the route/destination.
  • Supplies: Be sure to bring a sketchbook and something to draw with. I'll have some extra pens and watercolor kits if anyone wants to experiment or forgets something. A small shoulder bag is helpful so you're not carrying everything in your hands. (*Note that I recommend drawing in pen (mistakes are your friend!) and on a smaller sketchbook rather than a large pad given the short duration (small = fast)).
  • Sitting: We typically sit wherever we can. On the ground, a bench (if available), on a wall. If you need it, bring something like a towel or blanket to sit on if concerned about dirt or comfort.
  • Weather: Bring a jacket as it cools off in the evening and or hat/sunscreen as we may be in direct sunlight for up to 45 mins at a time. If the weather gets real bad we can go indoors or reschedule.
  • Questions & RSVP: Reach out so I can answer them. This group works best between 5 and 15 people so I may limit the number of attendees depending on the location. ***If you can't make it, be sure to update your reservation in advance so I have a good idea of final head count for planning purposes.
