Christmas Lights and Canyon Exploration in the Coulees

Details

Road Trip!
We'll be driving out to Drumheller, hiking the coulees, checking out local sights, eating like food-starved tourists and visiting the Christmas lights at the Atlas Mine. Lots of walking. Step counting fanatics rejoice. All day affair.

Carpool
We will carpool out. Will need drivers if a larger group is going. Will not be entertaining individual cars given the places we are going as it will be like herding cats. I can take 3 in my vehicle. Total going depends on available drivers and if you have tickets. Priority for drivers. Expected carpool is $30 per person as there is quite a bit of driving.

Itinerary

The day's showcase is visiting the **Christmas Night Lights at the Atlas Coal Mine**in the evening. Tickets are needed for this. You should pre-buy your ticket at Christmas Lights. It is $15 per person. Book the 5pm time slot.

Stops along the way include:

  • Visit Rosebud village.
  • Explore Horseshoe Canyon (see bit below).
  • Lunch in deserted mining town Wayne. A throwback to a bygone era. We'll cross 9 bridges to get there. Get your counting hat out. Post lunch, we'll be hiking the disc golf course there. Hopefully all 18 holes. Involves steep climbs and descents.
  • Time in downtown Drumheller, see the world's biggest dinosaur, check out local attractions and stores.
  • Go see the lights. There was a running mine car train last time out.
  • Visit the East Coulee School Museum for post light hot chocolate and chance to visit the museum at night.
  • Dinner in a Drumheller pub.

Note

  • There will be quite a bit of hiking in the coulees and canyons. The trails are very steep and loose. Be prepared. Microspikes are likely needed if there is snow/ice on the ground.
  • Temperatures will be cold, probably below 0c. Have adequate layers.
  • We'll be having have meals at restaurants, both lunch and dinner.
  • Expect to be back very very late.

You're expected to join in all activities, else this might not be the event for you.
The itinerary is going to be flexible and could change.

After you have got your tickets, let me know and I'll add you to the going list.

About the Lights:
40,000+ lights strung across the Atlas’ 12 acre site; it’s quite the sight. The Badlands’ dark skies and brilliant stars make the light show one of the best in Alberta. A truly unique rural Albertan experience!

  • This is a fun anything goes trip. If you are uptight about stuff, then this trip is also not for you.
  • You should be fit enough to tackle the canyons.
  • Sorry no dogs.

MANDATORY ITEMS:

  • Microspikes.
  • Poles recommended.
  • Adequate layers
  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • Individual First Aid Kit
  • Spare change of shoes.
  • Plastic bag for muddy shoes if carpooling.

If you need a ride, post in the comments. Ask early.
If you cannot attend after all, please amend your rsvp accordingly or you will be given a no show if you do not show up.
