Enjoy a winter walk from Winchester to Shawford, with lovely views of Winchester along the way.

We will be joining another group 'Hike for Charity' at the start of the hike, so this is a good opportunity to make new friends.

Carl R will lead the walk.

When we get to Shawford you can:

* Say farewell and go your own way.
* Continue with us back to 'Winchester.

**Travel to the start of the walk at** **Winchester railway station.**

* Travel with Carl by car from Reading to Winchester. We will use Winchester Park and Ride. We can pick up at Basingstoke railway station by arrangement. We will leave Reading railway station at 9am.
or
* Make your own way to the start at Winchester railway station. Please be there by 10.30am. The walk will start at 10.40am.

**Travel from Shawford after the walk finishes**

* Carl is not able to take you back to Reading from Shawford because he is leading a continuation walk that returns to Winchester.
* There is a railway station at Shawford and there may be other public transport options, depending on your destination after the walk finishes.
* If you would like a lift back to Reading or Basingstoke from Winchester with Carl you need to continue with the walk returning to Winchester. There is no additional cost for this option. **Costs**
Event Fee - £5 Donation to [GOSH](https://www.gosh.org/): cash on the day. The Meetup group 'Hike for Charity' are raising money for [Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children](https://www.gosh.org/).

If you are traveling from Reading or Basingstoke to Winchester with Carl a donation per person of £5 is requested to cover transport costs. There is no additional cost for the Park & Ride.

Walk grade: easy/moderate. We will maintain a steady pace over varied surfaces. St Catherin's hill is quite steep.

What to take: a packed lunch and plenty of water.

**Walk description**
Starting from Winchester station, we'll pass the town clock and the statue of Queen Anne, presented to the city in 1713. Next, we'll visit the historic 'Butter Cross' before moving on to King Alfred's statue. We'll then take a brief stop at the Visitor Information Centre to grab a free City Walk leaflet.

With the city bridge and city mill in sight, we’ll follow the River Itchen to St [Catherine's Hill](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Catherine%27s_Hill,_Hampshire) for great views of the city.

Our journey continues along the Itchen Way to finish at Shawford where we'll eat our packed lunches or seek refreshments in a nearby pub.

**Important information**

* You are advised to wear clothes and footwear that are suitable for walking during the prevailing weather conditions. This should include a waterproof jacket and could include a sun hat, sun cream, sun glasses, gloves, warm headwear and warm top layer.
* If you are not sure about suitable footwear or clothes or your ability to do the walk please discuss with Carl in advance so that you can make a considered decision.
