I'm doing it differently than I usually do. We will start later (9:30) and we WILL have lunch at the halfway point, out on the tip of Tomales Point. What won't change from my usual for this hike is that we will allow a few minutes here and there if we have special wildlife or other sightings. Please be sure this is something you will enjoy; if you prefer to just keep moving when you hike, you might want to do something else with your day. :)

This is an out and back trip heading out to the northwest tip of Tomales Point. It's \~4.75 miles each way with the ocean on one side and Tomales Bay on the other. Right now, Tomales Point is a feast for the eyes with a variety of colorful wildflowers. There are also birds of prey, coyote, mule deer, the occasional breaching whale offshore, and other critters to observe along the way regardless of the season. The terrain is mostly treeless and consists of rolling grassy hills and fields. We will walk the trail (some of it sand!) to the point before beginning the trip back.

Directions:

From Hwy 1 just south of Point Reyes Station, turn southwest onto Sr. Francis Drake Blvd. and follow it for 6.5 miles to a fork. Bear right onto Pierce Point Rd. 9.2 miles from the fork, where Pierce Point Rd bends sharply left toward McClures Beach, the trail head and parking are straight ahead.

Allow plenty of time to get to the trail head...it is a long way out to Pierce's Ranch!

As always:

Make sure you are prepared for a hike with a group. Hiking with a group is very different from hiking on your own. Make sure that you have the time to participate. A hike can take longer with a group. If you sign up to hike with a group, then you are expected to end with the group.

If you are in the lead you will end up waiting at trail junctions. If you are in the back, you will be asked to do your best to keep up with the group and at waiting points, the group may move on as soon as you are within sight. Our pace averages 2.5-3mph. If is your responsibility to keep track of where the group is going.

Please always check your email before you leave the house just in case there are any necessary adjustments to the hike details. Cancellations or any adjustments will be usually posted by 10 pm the previous evening but sometimes we have to cancel in the morning if the weather report worsens overnight.

MANDATORY!! Have a snack, that you can eat as you walk, in an easy to reach spot. We OFTEN stop for lunch well past halfway. Many times, you will need something to eat before we stop for lunch. Be prepared!

Duration: 4.5-5 hours

Facilities: none. Stop at Abbott's Lagoon or Kelham Beach trail head on the way out Pierce Point Ranch Road.

Bring plenty of water. More than one bottle is usually a good idea.

Bring a snack for the point and your lunch (which you can leave in the car). We will take a very brief break at the end of the point but will eat our lunches back at the trail head - bring a chair in case the picnic tables are not available.

Rule of thumb is $8 for one hour drive to trailhead. $12 for over one hour. Make sure to insist on paying your driver and do it as you get in the car please. That way you don't forget.
