What we’re about

This meetup is for anyone that is looking for a spiritual practice that recognizes that each of us are on our own spiritual journey. For me Christian practice is about three things; Knowing, Being and Doing. Quaker practice encourages adult education, discussion methods and practice as the Knowing. Silent worship, turning in towards the Light for guidance and leadings for our lives as the Being. Doing is born out of Knowing and Being, listening to leadings that come to us in the silence, vetted with the community for clearness and are led to pursue in some way.

The Quaker roots are Christian but different in that there is a mix between Catholicism (mystic) and  Protestant (prophetic) components. Unprogrammed Quaker communities embrace "Continuing Revelation", continually seeking from the Light insights to find our way on our journey and through issues that we face personally and in society. Quakers major tenet is that there is "That of God" in everyone where we share a common bond with all people no matter who they are. There is not a set dogma or set of beliefs that are required as each person tries to discern these things for themselves in community with others.

While worship is turning inside to wait on the Light, the outward demonstration of Quaker values are the Testimonies. The six Testimonies are Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality and Stewardship. These are not always easy to follow but one strives to work at being in unity with each one in all that we do.

There are any number of beliefs that Quakers have as many have come from other faith traditions or none at all but since Quakers feel that everyone is on their own journey there is no judgment as to who is right or wrong in their beliefs. The emphasis is on an experiential interpretation of Christ's teachings and a direct connection to the Light for guidance.

Quakers also have many wonderful practices that help those in the community with their personal and spiritual growth. Worship Sharing, Sense of the Meeting, anyone may speak out of the silence if they feel led to speak to the community, silence between each spoken ministry to name a few.

Join this meetup if you are interested in learning more about the Unprogrammed Quaker practice. You may be someone that is seeking something different in your spiritual practice and are welcome to be an Attender at future meetups. Live Oak Friends Meeting in Houston is the only Unprogrammed Meeting in Houston.
