Yuval Noah Harari's "Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind" offers a sweeping narrative of human history, tracing our species' journey from prehistoric times to the present day. The book argues that Homo sapiens came to dominate Earth through our unique ability to believe in shared myths and cooperate in large numbers. Harari identifies three major revolutions that shaped human history: the Cognitive Revolution (which enabled complex language and cooperation), the Agricultural Revolution (which he provocatively calls "history's biggest fraud" for making life harder while enabling population growth), and the Scientific Revolution (which unleashed unprecedented powers through the combination of science, empire, and capitalism). Throughout the book, Harari challenges conventional wisdom by highlighting how many aspects of human society—from money to human rights to nations—are actually "imagined realities" that exist because we collectively believe in them. He concludes by contemplating humanity's future, raising thought-provoking questions about artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and whether progress has actually made us happier.
