"Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow" by Yuval Noah Harari explores humanity's future after largely conquering its historical challenges of famine, plague, and war. Harari argues that humanity's next goals are achieving immortality, happiness, and godlike powers through technology. However, this pursuit may lead to unprecedented challenges: artificial intelligence could make many humans economically 'useless,' biotechnology could create a superior class of enhanced humans, and data algorithms might come to know us better than we know ourselves. The book suggests that humanism – the belief in individual human worth and free will – might become obsolete as technology advances. Harari warns that while we focus on upgrading humans to gods, we risk downgrading ourselves to mere data-processing systems, potentially losing the very qualities that make us human in our quest to become superhuman.
